The Palestinian students involved in the fight at Guilford College are willing to drop the charges in exchange for an apology.
Here’s Guilford’s reaction:
“Guilford College regrets that an attorney for some of the students involved in the Jan. 20 incident on campus has chosen to comment on this case at a time when we are set to begin the student judicial process.
If the five students charged have been able to reconcile privately, the College would applaud that. In fact, we have encouraged it. To date, however, we are unaware that it has happened.
However, even if the students apologize to one another, there are consequences for violations of the Student Code of Conduct at Guilford and the judicial process is underway in order to determine the facts of the case.
As everyone surely knows by now, Guilford’s way has been grounded in the Quaker testimonies of integrity, justice, diversity, peace and community. There has been no rush to judgment, no pre-judgment and a process for determining the facts and the sanction is underway. We intend to follow that process.”
Being so willing to drop the charges for a mere apology tells me the charges aren’t going to stick. I also find it interesting that attorney Amiel Rassabi mentioned that his clients plan to transfer from Guilford if the college holds them equally accountable. Makes you wonder if that’s a promise or a threat.
