There’s been plenty of debate about the worth of the Electoral College.

Bill Bennett offers his opinion while discussing the election of 1888 in America: The Last Best Hope, Volume I (Nelson Current, 2006):

Often, New York provided the winning margin in the electoral college. The need to carry New York’s large contingent of black voters and immigrants, including many Catholics and Jews, gave increased attention to minority concerns. Thus, the Founders’ wisdom in creating an electoral college was confirmed once again. The electoral college has usually operated to protect minorities from majority tyrrany. And minority rights are essential to freedom.
