Burlington Times-News reports on a citizens’ group organized to oppose the plan to develop the Guilford County prison farm, aka Project Haystack:

Anne Hice doesn’t want to see 2,000 acres in Alamance and Guilford counties developed for Project Haystack. And Hice, of Pleasant Garden, is doing something about it.

Hice is a member of Public Land s for Agricultural and Community Enrichment which was formed in late 2012 to address the future development needs of the Guilford County Prison Farm. Hice said she has been asked several times why she cares what happens to the site when her farm is in the southern part of Guilford County and is nowhere near the proposed Project Haystack development.

Hice said she believed it was in the community’s best interest to preserve farmland and that the site could be developed to provide local food to local markets.

“We as citizens of Ala mance County and Guilford County care about the property,” Hice said. “It is county owned property.”

Meanwhile the Rhino speculates Project Haystack might be dead in the water—- Burlington officials don’t see how they’ll make their money back after running a $14 million water line to the site.
