Business is dwindling for the US Postal Service because technology is tending toward paperless communications, and employers and banks are encouraging everybody to move away from paper. The USPS must now make tough decisions. It has suggested closing the Brevard Road processing center and shifting operations to Greenville, SC. A public hearing was held Monday so people could attempt to salvage with words that which the market cannot with money.

The local daily pulled some cogent commentary from the meeting:

“I’m still trying to get my head around how it can be more efficient to send our mail that’s going across town to Greenville and back,” said Asheville resident Beverly Switzer.

The longer delivery times that the shift would mean would just accelerate the decline in post office usage that the U.S. Postal Service says is causing the cuts, Asheville resident Jonathan Dudley said.
