Kwame Kilpatrick has become an advocate of smaller government in his second term as Detroit’s mayor. He’s tried to sell off a city-owned golf course, encouraged more charter and private school so children can actually get educations, and committed to sell another $36 million in city assets, now wants to sell 92 community parks. The Detroit Free Press provides a description:

Many of those neighborhoods are no longer dense in population and are dominated by urban prairies as the result of demolished homes, conditions Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s administration cites in its proposal.

He might not be able to get much money for parks located where they are, but any step to save money in the city is worth exploring even if it means giving away the parks. Maybe the neighborhoods would be willing to take over those parks that are worthwhile.
