Amber Northern and Michael Petrilli of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute argue that North Carolina’s mathematics standards are weak because the state “ditched Common Core.”

This is not true.

North Carolina reviewed and revised the Common Core math standards, which were adopted by the N.C. State Board of Education in 2010 and have done little to improve mathematics outcomes since.  The revised standards were adopted in 2017 and will be implemented this year.  The Common Core framework remained.
