This is a very timely article by one of America’s leading sociologists, Alan Wolfe. Appearing in the British journal, Prospect, Wolfe asserts that American Christian conservatives are more American than they are Christian or conservative. He argues that given a choice between old-time religion and the seductions of modernity, Christian Conservatives would overwhelmingly choose the latter. Wolfe finds this comforting. Dieting for Jesus
The article gives a wonderful look at the power of women in the Christian Conservative movement, especially those women who adhere to the doctrine of “making yourself attractive to God.” Wolfe titles the article “Dieting for Jesus,” because in making yourself attractive to God, dieting plays a central role.
