We have a winner! The NC Board of Elections finally said the magic words — “criminal investigation” — to allow the local Knight Ridder outlet to finally, FINALLY call for Speaker Jim Black to resign as speaker.

But the paper continues to dance on its reform-the-system pinhead, pointing to the $16,000 Black raised for Rep. Steve Wood but did not actually give him because Wood did not switch parties and support Black for speaker. Rep. Michael Decker, in contrast, switched parties and got money and a state job from Speaker Black.

“That’s another practice lawmakers must outlaw,” we’re told.

What? Bribery is not illegal in North Carolina? Whatever.

Welcome to the issue facing the state today, fellas. Better late than never.
