Hardly. This Herald-Sun story (site registration needed) points out that more than 60% of this year’s incoming freshmen are female. Just one more data point that refutes the tired cries about inequality that were certainly accurate a generation ago, but have in large part been eliminated. In fact, there is a credible argument today that it is men/boys who are systematically on the short of the end of the societal stick. Business Week magazine, in 2003, correctly tagged the phenomenon as “the new gender gap.” Still, UNC’s Week of Welcome celebration includes an event hosted by the Carolina Women’s Center called the “Women’s Equality Day Celebration.” Considering today’s reality for women — historic opportunities and accomplishments that in some cases eclipse those of men — this should be quite a party. But the most important achievement indicator for women is yet to come — the day when the so-called women’s rights advocates recognize there’s no longer a need for a “Women’s Equality Day.” Some of us have already recognized that fact.
