• The U.S. Senate primary ballot is getting more crowded, as new challengers have lined up against incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan. Former Shelby Mayor Ted Alexander announced he would run in a busy Republican primary contest. Meantime, Will Stewart, a self-described “average guy” information technology professional, will face Hagan in the Democratic primary.
• Hagan also announced that, with the Senate in session, she will stay in Washington during President Obama’s Wednesday visit to the Triangle. Republicans criticized the move.
• The Republican primary for the 7th Congressional District promises to be testy. New Hanover Commissioner Woody White says he has gained the support of several former campaign donors of his GOP rival, former state Sen. David Rouzer, R-Johnston.
• As expected, Rep. Virginia Foxx, 5th District Republican, announced she will seek a sixth term in Congress.
• Frank Roche, who’s challenging 2nd District Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers in the GOP primary, will speak Jan. 28 to the Cumberland County Tea Party.
