• We hope you’ll take a moment to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Normandy invasion and reflect on the heroism and sacrifices of those who served.
• The General Assembly is taking a weekend off so that members can attend their respective parties’ annual conventions. Not surprisingly, Sen. Kay Hagan will address the state Democratic Party convention and her GOP opponent, House Speaker Thom Tillis, will speak to the Republican gathering.
• National Journal asks if President Obama’s new regulations on coal-fired power plants are “sabatoging” Democrats’ attempts to maintain control of the U.S. Senate.
• At a campaign stop in Boone, Supreme Court Justice Mark Martin, who’s running for the seat being vacated by the retirement of Chief Justice Sarah Parker, vowed if elected to improve efficiency and technology throughout the state’s judicial system.
