• Incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan can’t take back her vote for the Affordable Care Act, so she’s defending it. Hagan and other Democratic incumbents are banking on the law becoming more popular (or at least less of an electoral liability) as the year goes on.
• Even though challenger Frank Roche highlighted immigration as the main reason to dump incumbent Rep. Renee Ellmers in the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District, a post-election poll commissioned by a group backing immigration reform found that most voters considered the issue relatively unimportant. Ellmers supports a reform package allowing current illegal immigrants the opportunity to gain legal status eventually.
• The Rev. Mark Walker pulled out a somewhat surprising second-place finish in the 6th Congressional District GOP primary, placing him in a July 15 runoff with presumed favorite Phil Berger Jr. Walker credits grass-roots campaigning — knocking on doors and putting up signs — along with targeted advertising buys on cable outlets — for his strong performance.
