• Perhaps the only bright spot for Democrats in Tuesday’s shellacking was their sweep of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. The board switches from a narrow GOP majority to unanimous Democratic control. Look for the new commission to put a transit tax (a precursor to Triangle-wide fixed commuter rail) — a priority for progressives that’s been thwarted by Republicans — on the Wake ballot soon.

• If you were surprised by some of last night’s outcomes (and not just those in the Tar Heel State), election stats maven Nate Silver offers an explanation: polls biased in favor of Democrats. Nationally, the average bias was 6 percentage points, which Silver says shows a reversal from the 2012 polls that favored Republicans.
