• A new High Point University poll finds the race for the U.S. Senate seat between incumbent Democrat Hagan and Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis tied at 44 percent among 802 likely voters. Libertarian Sean Haugh received 5 percent. The “generic” congressional ballot has Republicans outpacing Democrats 48 percent to 43 percent. The poll’s margin of error is +/-3.5 percent.

• Meantime, in its initial poll of the North Carolina Senate race, Monmouth University finds Hagan leading Tillis 48-46 among a sample of 432 likely voters. Libertarian Sean Haugh gets 1 percent. The poll’s margin of error is +/-4.7 percent.

• Tillis speaks with Chuck Todd of NBC News about the role of advertising in competitive political campaigns.

• The conservative group American Commitment purchases radio advertising to counter what it calls “race-baiting” ads against Tillis run by Democratic groups on radio stations that target a black audience.
