The left-wing group Progress Action N.C. responds:

• The big news from last weekend’s state Republican Party convention was the surprise election of Harrisburg businessman Hassan Harnett as state party chairman. Harnett defeated the GOP establishment’s favored candidate, Craig Collins of Gastonia.

• A new poll from American Crossroads, the political group founded by GOP adviser Karl Rove, showed incumbent U.S. Sen. Richard Burr outpacing two potential Democratic rivals in next year’s Senate race. Burr would defeat former Sen. Kay Hagan 49-42 percent and state Sen. Dan Blue 50-36 percent. Neither has announced plans to run. The poll also gave Burr much more favorable results than other polling groups, with Burr scoring a favorable rating of 50 percent and an unfavorable rating of 34 percent.

• The ink was barely dry on Gov. Pat McCrory’s signature of a bill extending the waiting period for abortions from 24 hours to 72 hours before Roy Cooper started raising money from Democrats. The attorney general, who’s running next year against McCrory, said in his fundraising message that the governor broke a campaign promise.
