• Is Mike McIntyre planning a 2016 Senate run? A John Locke Foundation colleague recently received a call from a polling firm asking about potential Senate matchups, and only three names were mentioned: Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr and two Democrats — Kay Hagan, who lost her seat to Thom Tillis in 2014, and McIntyre, the veteran 7th District U.S. representative who retired last year. As noted in this space, at the end of March, McIntyre had more than $315,000 cash on hand in his House campaign account.
• Speaking of Burr, Roll Call’s Stuart Rothenberg profiles the two-term incumbent, saying he’s “skeptical” that the senator is in any real peril this cycle.
• The News & Observer conducts a midterm review of Gov. Pat McCrory as he gears up for next year’s re-election campaign.
• State Auditor Beth Wood, who’s taken on a host of agencies and programs during her tenure, announced earlier this week she’ll seek a third term in 2016.
