The self-righteous editors of The Daily Tar Heel speak of it as “a ridiculous affront to the spirit of free discourse that should take place in a university setting.” Sorry, guys, but that’s almost like hailing the spirit of free discourse in the setting of Castro’s Cuba. At least UNC-CH allows some dissent, but as Alpha Iota Omega found, they will go to extreme lengths to make it clear the university’s stamp of approval is not on them.

“An organization that accepts members of only one religion does not deserve the official recognition of a public university” ? yes, it does, specifically because the university is a public university. UNC-CH is not allowed to discriminate on religious grounds, which is what they’re doing now.

The self-contradicting spirit of Diversity ?ber Alles reigns at UNC-CH. Any group must be “diverse” ? just like every other group. Diversity according to UNC-CH is, of course, primarily observable genetic traits, except religion ? the only “diversity” trait that involves beliefs. Almost all student groups can discriminate among their memberships as to whether prospective members actually believe in the tenets of the groups ? but not Christians. It’s not “discrimination” for, say, a chess club to tell a checkers enthusiast, Sorry, not interested.

The problem is UNC-CH’s Orwellian code, not the Christian group. And not even sycophantic student journalists, although they are a symptom of the greater sickness.
