It is cruel to make fun of people who communicate differently. We are supposed to respect diversity, but sometimes I am at a total loss. December 7, the good people at Transition Asheville are going to hold a panel discussion with audience participation on the following:

Most of us take access to food for granted, but the truth is, access to food is neither as secure as it needs to be nor as equal as it should be.

  • The cost of food production & distribution rises as availability of cheap energy declines.
  • Increasing population density decreases land available for agriculture.
  • The impact of climate change has already caused unpredictable market fluctuations.
  • The recession, job loss, underemployment, and family health challenges mean 53% of households facing hunger must choose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel, higher than the NC average of 49% and the US total figure at 42%.

I never thought about equal rights to caviar before, and I never considered food acquisition high-risk. As for the bullet points, I agree with the first, disagree with the next two, and am totally befuddled by the third. Perhaps I need to attend to get educated.
