WPTF radio is reporting a “standoff” at the intersection of Proctor and Shepherd Streets in Durham. That’s just a few blocks from Rosedale Avenue, where a man was arrested this morning in the Eve Carson murder. City Councilman Eugene Brown apparently told WRAL-TV that the standoff involves a second suspect in the case.

I hope this case wakes some people up on the Council and in our police department. The “Hug-a-Thug” approach to crime in Durham (as described by commenter Eric, a former Durham police officer, earlier today) obviously is not working.

Time to pull your heads out, leaders.

UPDATE: The N&O has mug shots of the two men, the one in custody (Demario James Atwater) and the one who is not (Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr.). That means Lovett has a rap sheet. No surprise there. Is there some judge or magistrate in Durham quaking in his or her boots right now because they let this guy out on the streets when they shouldn’t have? Wouldn’t surprise me a bit.
