hhFascinating story from Freedom papers Raleigh correspondent Barry Smith on the implementation of 287(g) programs around the state. Some legislators are trying to claim that folks didn’t know that the program means immigration status screening for every person booked into a participating county jail. That a mere “traffic violation” may result in deportation.

Yes, exactly.

Now it is no surprise that dopey Liddy Dole is muddling this all up, running ads that make it seem that the program focuses on “repeat offenders” — it does not, nor should it. The program simply extends to immigration violations the same process that is undertaken with regard to the criminal code. Namely, that if the law catches you for one thing, it is gonna look to see if you are wanted for something else.

This is not a terribly complex notion to grasp. I’m pretty sure the Sheriff of Nottingham employed it back in Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood knew the risks, and took them just the same.

And he didn’t even have whiny bunch of pols to back him up.
