The trustees of Winston-Salem State think so. And maybe they are right, I really do not have any special knowledge of the situation beyond what the wire report tells me.
But I note that the move to Division I entails adding scholarships, coaches, and entire sports teams. That will cost real money. There is also a built-in assumption that WSSU’s enrollment will climb by about 50 percent in the next five years.
As a news consumer and taxpayer I really wonder if that expectation makes any sense at all. What are the recent enrollment trends for the school? What will drive this explosive growth?
