EGR valves do exactly what the name says —recirculates exhaust back to the engine. Some complain EGRs affect performance —my Freestar runs great —- but they’re a big reason why cars have increasingly run cleaner and more fuel efficient since the 1960s.
Which in turn is the reason why I lose patience with enviros and newspaper editorials who want to spend billions herding us into mass transit because the air quality’s supposedly so bad.
