Of anarcho-capitalism, that is. In today’s Freeman essay, David Hebert argues that many people misunderstand how anarcho-capitalism really would work, if only we could get government out of the way.
One of my favorite Mencken lines goes like this: The aim of practical politics is to menace the people with an endless series of hobgoblins so they will clamor for protection by the state. Murray Rothbard elaborated on that at length in his great essay “The Anatomy of the State.” Rulers and politicians have invested a lot into making people fear freedom from their taxes and mandates and prohibitions. But Hebert is right: Don’t be afraid.
