Last night, I succumbed to a fit of narcolepsy. The day hadn’t gone as intended, and when I sat down to blog, I was overwhelmed by politics in the headlines. Unable to cope, I set the alarm for 45 minutes later and slipped into a dream of catching a flight to England. The next thing I knew, it was morning. I didn’t want to get into the hoopla, because the JLF is supposed to be nonpartisan, and every time I even mention D’s or R’s, I feel like an insincere idiot.

Today, I’ll address the drama. Bill Russell quit the Republican Party. It was big news, because unlike most Republicans who are leaving the party in droves, Russell currently serves on Asheville City Council. Furthermore, Michael Muller, who served as his campaign manager and the campaign manager for Gordon Smith (D), but now writes for the Mountain Xpress, was on-hand to cover the event.

Local Republican Party Chair Chad Nesbitt wished him good riddance. He never voted like a Republican anyway. Russell left the same day Nesbitt led a rally to get Republican candidates to sign a contract promising to uphold the Constitution or lose the support of the Buncombe County GOP. Russell claimed only to be disenchanted with partisan politics, but some alleged he was ill of Nesbitt. Nesbitt has been accused of changing from a D to an R the same time two other persons with high status in the BCGOP did for personal ambitions or, worse, to destroy the Republican Party.

Russell’s change of heart was just as good as any politician’s who decides he wants to run for higher office midterm in showing the value of personal campaign contributions. You’re paying to elect Morpheus.

In other news, the Republicans were accused of grandstanding again for complaining that an early voting location was 18 feet away from the door of Congressman Heath Shuler’s office. Shuler is running for re-election, and he has signs on his property. With much pomp and circumstance, it was decided that Nesbitt was off-base because Shuler’s office door is a full 25 feet away.

Meanwhile, government keeps inventing ways to spend money it doesn’t have. The Recovery looks like a recession because of GW, and GW needed more than 8 years to fix what Clinton did.
