Let the record show that a little over one-half of one percent of the 800 citations handed out by the CMP over the Super Bowl Booze It & Lose It campaign were for actual DWI. Meanwhile, around 600 of the citations were for speeding, seatbelt, and “other traffic violations.”

Let’s just call these efforts generalized traffic enforcement crackdowns and forget the cute names and pretense. Maybe if we remind the public that the police cannot actually “target” drunk drivers, just bad drivers in general, we’ll get less of both.
