The Durham County Sheriff’s office has been asked to look at the results of an audit of Durham County’s Department of Social Services (DSS). DSS, according to the News & Observer, purchased more than $200,000 worth of gift cards over about five years. Records of who received what and why are sketchy.

Gift cards were initially intended to be used for child and family emergency programs, but over time their use expanded, the audit says. There were no controls in place to ensure how the gift cards were actually spent and what was done with left over funds.

It is infuriating that there is so little regard for accounting for what’s done with other people’s money.
