Tax cut! Yippee! Wait. It is just the state sales tax. The tax cut is one-quarter of a penny — or in other words exactly half of the “temporary” half-cent sales tax hike that is supposed to be long gone by now. Hang on.
Stop it. We know the pols in Raleigh have utter contempt for the public, but it is a surprise that editors and headline writers hold their fellow citizens in such low regard. Besides, a more descriptive headline would be ‘Easley Spends Surplus, Hikes Minimum Wage.’ But no, we get:
That just is not the big story, and certainly requires the backstory of tax hikes to frame it. Otherwise…now what?
