The public-records lawsuit Carolina Journal and other media outlets filed against former Gov. Mike Easley’s administration in 2008 yielded a fresh revelation this week: Easley conducted state business with a secret private e-mail account. That news led to interviews for CJ Managing Editor Rick Henderson with both WTVD Television and WPTF Radio. WRAL, WGHP, and WLOS are among the other television stations that discussed CJ and the John Locke Foundation in covering the story. The News & Observer mentioned JLF’s role in the story both in the online “Under the Dome” blog and in the newspaper’s print version. The Charlotte Observer also picked up the story. The McClatchy media company publicized that article nationally, and it ended up in other publications across the country, including the Miami Herald. The Lincoln Tribune republished Henderson’s CJ exclusive on the latest twists in the Easley story. In other Easley-related news, both The Lincoln Tribune and the daily N.C. Senate Republican e-mail highlighted CJ Executive Editor Don Carrington‘s latest exclusive about the impact of ongoing criminal investigations centering on the former governor. Carrington discussed this week’s developments with Lockwood Phillips on WTKF’s “Viewpoints Radio.” The Carolina Talk Network also posted online Curtis Wright’s latest radio interview with Carrington on the Easley case and other corruption stories. The Washington Daily News interviewed Carrington about one aspect of the case involving former Easley aide Ruffin Poole, whom a grand jury recently indicted on 51 corruption charges. Rhinoceros Times editor John Hammer discussed Poole, Easley, and Carolina Journal‘s role in exposing the Easley scandal in his latest “Under the Hammer” columnCJ Associate Editor David Bass also publicized the latest Easley-related revelations through his work with The American Spectator. A Senate Republican e-mail had highlighted Bass’ earlier story about Poole’s federal court appearance.
