I was browsing 4th District Democratic U.S. Rep. David Price’s web site looking for a quote I heard on the radio during President Bush’s visit to North Carolina on Monday. A radio news person quoted Price as saying the economy looked good, but only “on paper.” I couldn’t find that quote but I did find this:
Like many North Carolinians, I am relieved that the Triangle?s economy has rebounded somewhat after a troubling period of high unemployment rates and limited job growth following the 2001 recession.
But I remain concerned that, despite improvements, middle class families continue to face some serious economic challenges. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities reports that this economic recovery is the most sluggish since WWII. North Carolina?s July unemployment rate is up to 5.7%, the highest level in more than a year, as the number of jobs fell for the first time in months. Millions of people have fallen into poverty and/or lost their health insurance since 2001, when President Bush first took office, and we have witnessed the greatest average annual decline in household income in that same period.
That didn’t jibe with this story that I read recently, or with this one.
What with outdated information given out by Democratic members of congress (an accident?), not to mention the media itself, no wonder so many people think the economy is tanking when all the indicators are positively soaring.
