Lindalyn Kakadelis’ recent commentary on the teaching of history in public schools caught the attention of the Raleigh News & Observer’s “Q”
section. The paper plans to run the piece Sunday. Among Kakadelis’
concerns are political correctness and the report from the Fordham
Foundation that only 31 percent of middle school history teachers and
41 percent of high school history teachers majored in history.
Meanwhile, NCEA board member Tom Shuford has also had success airing
his views on the pages of the N&O. Several letters to the editor have been printed,
including a recent piece in which he expressed concern over Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) scores for applicants for graduate study in
educational administration – which reportedly were the lowest of 34
subcategories tabulated by the Educational Testing Service.
