The Senate tried to kill 15 school districts in the name of equity and efficiency. Rick Martinez, in this morning’s N&O, writes that there are too many nonprofits working on domestic violence and sexual assault: “[A]ny way you cut it, 88 agencies doing the same kind of work doesn’t exactly scream efficiency.”

When
is the last time you heard somebody argue that homeschooling should
stop because it is inefficient? For all the complaints about gas stations, Wal-Mart,
and other commercial establishments, I doubt many zoning boards have
heard arguments that the stores are inefficient. Now why is that?

Actually, Martinez gives a reason and notes that in the case of the nonprofits, at least, the
state is acting on it. The nonprofits have to compete for funding from
the state and private donors instead of receiving an automatic grant.
But it is too much to ask for competition in schools when the
legislature knows that one district per county is the most efficient
