Eleven of the 27 applicants for “fast track” charters will move to the next phase of the application process. Schools that made the cut include the following:
- High Point College Prep (Guilford)
- Water’s Edge Village School (Currituck)
- Cornerstone Charter Academy (Guilford)
- Howard and Lillian Lee Scholars Charter (Orange)
- Mendenhall Country Day School (Guilford)
- Research Triangle High School (Durham)
- North East Carolina Prep (Edgecombe)
- Bear Grass Charter School (Martin)
- Pinnacle Classical Academy (Gaston)
- Corvian Community School (Mecklenburg)
- Triangle Math and Science (Wake)
The members of the NC Public Charter School Advisory Council emphasized that their focus is quality, not quantity. That is why 16 proposed charter schools will not be part of the interview process. However, schools that are out of the running for a “fast track” charter will have the opportunity to revise and resubmit their application next year.
The Triad and the Triangle were the big winners. The advisory council was not kind to applicants from Mecklenburg and its neighboring counties.
