Just made a Friday afternoon run to the Harris Teeter on Cornwallis and Elm. Quite the bottleneck —-it’s honestly hard to imagine additional traffic generated by a proposed condo development.

I realize the preservation of the Commencement House is an issue. By the same token, condos at that location would be a New Urbanist’s dream, considering the fact that practically every major service — from fine dining to dry cleaning to drugstores —- is within walking distance. Residents wouldn’t have to sell out to CVS, either, since historic Brown-Gardiner is right there. And —here’s the best part —- public transportation runs down Elm practically round the clock, so condo owners could catch a city bus downtown.

Who wouldn’t be all for that?
