A city council candidate and a mayoral candidate have dropped out of the race before early voting begins. Jenny Bowen, a strong contender with a progressive following, said she was dropping out for health reasons. She gave endorsements for Cecil Bothwell and Dr. Carl Mumpower or Gordon Smith, whichever the people prefer. The spread on political philosophy is consistent with her advocacy for democracy. Conservatives have said they hope Bothwell makes it through the primary because they consider him too progressive to be electable. Mumpower uncompromisingly advocates for constitutionally-proscribed powers of government and limited taxation. Smith, however, supports council involvement in initiatives to support green transportation, green building, and affordable housing.
Also rumored to be dropping out is mayoral candidate Denise Pendleton. Pendleton was one of three conservative unknowns challenging incumbent Mayor Terry Bellamy.
