The Swain County Board of Commissioners approved an expansion of the DSS. Sarcasm aside, the measure, despite it being growth of government, and that in a department that probably shouldn’t exist; is likely a semi-good move. It is intended to reduce two of the three trite no-no’s, fraud and abuse (if I could be trusted to impart the correct meaning to words). Of questionable returns is the decision to hire another supervisor in Child Protective Services. More salient is the hiring of a Medicaid and food stamp fraud investigator. Almost $30,000 is currently being pursued by the county for instances of fraud rounded up by 0.2 FTE’s worth of labor.
