The easiest thing in the world is for politicians to make promises that the government will ladle out money in the future. It would have been best if we had never gone down the path of allowing the government to enact programs that merely entail taking money from one citizen and giving it to another — Madison once said that he could not lay his finger on the provision of the Constitution that gave Congress such authority — and now that we have blundered down that path, turning around is going to be very, very hard.
