The city of Hickory has been experiencing a contentious debate about a proposed downtown development district that would levy a higher property tax to fund revitalization efforts. But now, supporters of the proposal say they are no longer seeking a vote on it this year.

The reason? One city official said that, in the words of a newspaper report, ?there wasn?t sufficient time to get downtown property owners educated to the specifics of a new proposed district.?

That is to say, downtown property owners aren?t inclined to open their wallets wide to additional governmental pilferage and have not yet been ?educated? out of this irrational prejudice.
