North Carolina’s constitution contains a unique collection of clauses intended to protect economic liberty. The framers added them at various points in our history to prevent corporate cronyism and to protect free enterprise. But, as North Carolina Court of Appeals Judge Richard Dietz argues in an upcoming academic paper, these protections are under assault from entrenched interest groups and have unfortunately been weakened. In this conversation, Judge Dietz will explain what makes our state’s constitution different and will share the challenges that are taking place. Our panelists will join the judge in a discussion of the need for these protections and why it’s important to inspire judges to understand the courts’ role in defending economic liberty and to encourage the public to care about those who do.
