This month we celebrate the silver anniversary of a key moment in North Carolina’s school choice movement: the bipartisan signing of our state’s public charter school law. Today, 19 of the original group of approved charters continue to serve North Carolina kids with an educational environment and focus that meets their needs. Despite the growth of the charter sector of K-12 education, barriers remain in place that hinder its potential to serve. In this conversation we’ll talk about the role these schools play in educating North Carolina kids, myths that persist about how charters operate, and the future of charter schools following a difficult year of schooling. We’ll explore possible legislative and administrative reforms, and we’ll discuss how best to meet the needs of parents who’ve received an education of their own while supervising their kids’ learning during the pandemic.
