Participatory budgeting (PB) is a process that allows residents to control a portion of the local budget by submitting proposals for consideration and then by voting on projects. PB has been gaining traction throughout the United States over the last decade and North Carolina has been a regional leader in its adoption.  Greensboro was the first city in the Southeast to implement PB and Durham has recently completed its first cycle.  This talk will introduce PB, discuss some of the goals of PB, acknowledge some of the challenges that communities have faced, and highlight some of the outcomes that have occurred in North Carolina and beyond.
