The idea of people being hungry or homeless is abhorrent to all of us, regardless of our ideological or political beliefs. How society should address these terrible problems is where the disagreement begins. In his latest book — Real Solutions: Common Sense Ideas For Solving Our Most Pressing Problems — NC State economist and professor Mike Walden looks at government programs and policies designed to reduce poverty and assesses their results. He will share his research and analysis with us, evaluate ideas supported by the Left and the Right, and offer his own solutions for reforming our approach. Locke and Carolina Journal analysts with a special interest in reducing poverty will join our conversation. We’ll get their perspective on Professor Walden’s ideas and hear their views on the role that individuals, communities, and state policies can play in lifting people out of poverty and into self-reliance.
