COVID-19 has upended schooling as we know it, moving most kids online for months on end, with the extent of learning loss and mental health issues not yet fully understood.  On the positive side, the pandemic has given parents a more up-close and in-depth view of how their kids learn, their aptitudes, their challenges, and their social development. This knowledge will empower parents moving forward. But putting parents fully in charge with the child as the center of our focus requires that we rethink the fundamentals of K-12 education. Specifically, it’s time we look at funding students instead of systems. In this conversation, we’ll look at the results of a recent Reason Foundation study of direct funding and education savings accounts. We’ll explore the prospects for improving academic achievement, educational attainment, crime reduction, safety, and satisfaction.
