North Carolina faces at least five ongoing lawsuits linked to congressional and legislative election maps drawn since 2011. Some suits challenged maps based on the use of voters’ race. The challengers alleged racial gerrymandering. Other suits targeted maps because of the Republican-led General Assembly’s efforts to secure a partisan advantage. The challengers alleged partisan gerrymandering. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in two of the cases, but neither ruling offered a final resolution. The nation’s highest court also recently heard a Wisconsin redistricting case that could influence the outcome of North Carolina’s cases. It’s hard to keep track of these cases without a scorecard.
