Look in the mirror and you might be willing to admit that, at one time or another, you’ve wanted to be seen as taking the high moral ground as you defend your views and deride the opinion of others.  It’s called grandstanding, and our Shaftesbury Society guest, Bowling Green State University Professor Brandon Warmke, says we’re all guilty of it. In fact, it’s the subject of the new book he co-authored, Grandstanding: The Use and Abuse of Moral Talk. In this conversation, we’ll talk with Professor Warmke about why the subject interested him enough to write a book, and we’ll look at current examples of how grandstanding plays out. We’ll also explore why so many of us want to be seen as committed and knowledgeable, the lengths we’ll go to achieve it, the damage it can cause, and how we rebuild a public square that rejects it.
