Established in 1997, NC MedAssist is a not-for-profit, statewide (2009), licensed pharmacy. Its mission is to provide free prescription medications, healthcare advocacy, and related educational services to low-income and uninsured North Carolinians. NC MedAssist partners with 98 free clinics and healthcare systems throughout the state. The organization’s work illustrates how private organizations can play a critical role in solving problems outside of government mandates and taxpayer funding. In this presentation, Sidney Bernstein will discuss the pharmacy’s genesis and mission, how its business model operates within the complex health care sector, and key challenges going forward.
