Big surprise: John Edwards impresses the Bennett College crowd:

Edwards used his trip Tuesday to Greensboro to reach out to the political left, calling for a higher minimum wage, championing a universal health care plan and declaring his campaign would become “carbon neutral” to fight global warming.

He also wooed young voters, who made up many of the few hundred people who attended the event at Bennett College.

“I’m here to tell you, young people on college campuses have changed this country before,” said Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, “and you can change this country again.”

Edwards didn’t provide much detail about his ideas during his 18-minute speech, but some of the students were impressed.

“Inspiring,” said Amani Santiago, a Bennett senior who liked Edwards’ plan for what the candidate called “truly universal” health care to fix the “dysfunctional” system in place….

His plan to raise the federal minimum wage — he wants it to go from $5.15 per hour to $7.50 — sat well with Marcus Bass, a sophomore at nearby N.C. A&T who attended the afternoon event.

“We’re taking these minimum wage jobs,” he said of college students, “so it’s important that we have a candidate who expresses our issues, especially on wages and employment.”
