Swain County Sheriff Curtis Cochran disapproves of the pathway to citizenship proposed by US Senate Bill 744. He and thirty-one North Carolina sheriffs signed a letter opposing the bill. Cochran says undocumented criminals are not a problem in his county, but the proposed legislation would pose problems for sheriffs in other jurisdictions. He was disappointed law enforcement was not consulted when the immigration reform was drafted. One complaint the sheriffs harbor is the bill would grant citizenship to illegals with criminal records.
