I loved the sentimental lead of this N&R story pushing the War Memorial Stadium bond:
Hot dogs and the Chicken Dance.
Those are the things that make War Memorial Stadium more memorable than Yankee Stadium for Greensboro’s Susan Kennedy.
“I grew up an hour outside of Yankee Stadium, so I was used to this huge, impersonal, overpriced experience,” she said.
In contrast, Kennedy describes War Memorial Stadium as having a sweet, community feeling that’s “right out of the movie ‘Bull Durham.’ ”
“Everything about it was magical,” she said.
Funny, “magical” is the word this Southern boy used to describe his first trip to Yankee Stadium. The history of Ruth’s house washed over me so completely that the Yankees became my American League team for a while. (I’m over it now, though, and I was glad to see the Yanks get booted by the Tigers, even if it costs Joe Torre his job.)
By contrast, my last memory of War Memorial Stadium is of nearly passing out over a urinal in a restroom where it had to be 100 degrees because the air conditioning wasn’t working.
Bottom line: They’re both old stadiums that have long passed their prime years.
