According to a survey done for the American Association of University Professors, faculty compensation increased 3.8 percent last year, which was more than the rate of inflation (2.5 percent). Inside Higher Ed has the story here.

Furthermore, among public universities, UNC-CH ranked 8th in average salary for full professors — $126,800.

The bad news in the study, according to some, is that there are — horrors! — gaps between compensation for professors in different fields. Said Rosemary Feal, executive director of the Modern Language Association, “The pay gap worries me because it might discourage those who want to teach language and literature.” I doubt very much that anyone who has a strong enough interest in language and literature to contemplate a teaching career in the field would turn away from it just because a professor in, say, accounting, is paid somewhat more than a professor in English.
