I’m going say something about the murder of two CMPD officers last night and I don’t much care how it is taken.

Once those responsible are caught — and it is just a matter of time — if it turns out they are multiple repeat violent offenders, District Attorney Peter Gilchrist should resign immediately. This is not about about blame or scapegoating, but the simple fact will be that Mecklenburg County’s catch-and-release program for violent offenders will have been directly responsible for the deaths of two police officers.

It does not matter if the DA was totally or even mostly responsible for that state of affairs. The simple fact is that something has to change in the criminal justice system in this town. A new DA is one of the easiest ways to make a change and draw attention to the ongoing problems with staffing and funding for public safety in the Queen City.
